Man killed in U.S. 30 accident

One man died and four injured in an accident Saturday, March 6, on U.S. 30 and Elston Road. Kent A Nicolaysen, 40 of Fulton, was eastbound on U.S. 30, at approximately 4:30 pm, and was turning north onto Elston Road near Fulton, when a vehicle driven by Paul E Lendman, 23, of Sterling, started to pass the Nicolaysen vehicle. Lendman lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a pole, killing passenger Steven P. Lendman, 22, a student at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He is the son of Gregg and Denise Lendman of Sterling, Illinois and cousin of the driver.

All passengers in the Lendman vehicle were transported to Mercy Hospital, Clinton Iowa, including the driver and Cassidy C. Johnson, 18 of Milledgeville. Walter E. Palma, 22, of Milledgeville, and Alfredo Rangel, 23, were then transported to University Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.

Nicolaysen was also transported to Mercy, but was treated and released.

Illinois State Police, Fulton Fire Department and Ambulance, Med-Force Helicopter, and Medics EMS of Clinton, Iowa aided Whiteside County Sheriff’s Department.
