An Awesome Finish by Filly Swimmers at Sectionals

By: Lindsey Smith

Rachel Fedyk advances to state. Fillies place fifth out of 16 teams at Sectionals with only seven swimmers, while the other teams all had at least twenty.

Although again greatly outnumbered, the Fillies finished off their season with a bang. They took fifth out of sixteen teams at their Sectional meet on the 15th with 96 points. Every Filly swimmer cut time in nearly every event that they swam.

In the 200 Medley Relay, Michelle swam backstroke. Her split was a 36.12. Ann dove off of Michelle and was timed at a 37.40. Lindsey swam the butterfly leg in a 31.35. Katie brought up the rear with a 30.88. The Fillies' time of 2:15.75 was good enough to claim thirteenth.

Katie and Michelle both swam the 200-yard free for the Fillies. Michelle's time was a 2:29.76. She beat out Emily Novak of Jefferson, by less than a tenth of a second. Katie's time was a 2:30.58, a personal best. She was just behind Michelle by less than a second. Michelle finished in eighteenth and Katie grabbed twentieth.

Thirteenth place was awarded to Megan Tenboer who swam her personal best time of 2:31.86. Megan was just touched out of twelfth place by Jules Czechorski of Boylan by less than a second.

Rachel and Smiley surrounded Lynn Siemert for the second meet in a row. Rachel and Lynn both made the state cut which is a 25.09. Rachel's time was a 24.53 and Lynn?s was a 24.35, a pool record. Rachel placed second behind Lynn. Smiley just missed the state time by 0.16 seconds, but she had a personal best and a third place. Smiley just beat out Taylor Martin of Rockford East by 0.01 seconds.

Lindsey Smith placed in her only individual event of the day. In the 100 butterfly, Lindsey swam a personal best time of 1:10.21, and touched out Molly Shirmer of Hononegah by 0.03 seconds. She placed twelfth. Lindsey just missed the JV record by 0.22 seconds.

Smiley and Rachel were again on both sides of Lynn in the 100 freestyle. Lynn again won the event, with a time of 53.27. Rachel again followed Lynn in second place with a 53.71. Both are going to state, along with Freeport's Emily Cross, who finished third. Smiley finished fourth and again just missed the state cut by a second with a time of 55.32. The state cut is a 54.29.

Katie Kuehl was the only Filly to swim the 500 free. She finished in eighteenth place. Katie's time was a 6:47.89, a personal best, only two seconds off of her goal time of a 6:45.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Fillies hoped to return to state for the second year in a row, but Freeport and Guilford beat them by less than two seconds. Smiley, Lindsey, Megan, and Rachel teamed together to get a time of 1:44.45, a season best by two seconds. They finished third over all.

Frustration mounded as nothing seemed to be going the way that the Fillies had hoped with the exception of Rachel's state times, so Megan and Rachel tried to cheer up the team by making up a cheer for Smiley and Lindsey. "They're the Smith's, they're fun to swim with, and when they jump in the pool, the crowd says, 'Wow! They're cool!'" It almost worked!

Megan was in the next event, the 100 backstroke. Her time was a 1:10.12. Megan just touched out Jamie Wilt of Auburn High by 0.7 seconds. Megan again came in thirteenth.

Ann finished in nineteenth place in the 100-yard breaststroke. Her time was a 1:23.11, a personal best by two seconds. Ann followed Ashley Downing of Harlem by less than a second.

In the final event of the season for the Fillies, with an exception to Rachel, the Fillies swam to fourth place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Smiley, Lindsey, Megan, and Rachel finished with a 3:56.27, an eight second seedtime cut. Smiley swam her leg in a 57.05. Lindsey beat her best 100 free time by three seconds with a time of 1:02.78. Megan also swam a 1:02 in her leg, a 1:02.81. Rachel brought up the rear of the relay with a 53.63. With this fourth place finish the Fillies finished fifth in their Sectional.

Congratulations to the Fillies on an awesome season, doing many things others thought impossible for a team of our size. Great finish. Congratulations, Rachel, on your state times. Good luck this weekend. To the other Fillies who almost made their goals, but just missed: be like a Cubs fan and say, "There's always be next year."
Great season girls. I had a blast, and I hope you did too.
