Fillies win 9 of 11, not enough to knock off Byron

By: Lindsey Smith

The Fillies finally got to swim against a team that was about their size. Byron brought fourteen swimmers down to the Filly pool last Tuesday, the 21st of October.

Size again worked against Morrison as they ended up losing the meet by ten points, which really isn't that much in a swim meet. The Fillies won nine of the eleven events, as the only Tiger Shark that the Fillies couldn't tame was S. Israel, who won both of the events that the Fillies lost. Morrison was right with Byron, until the last two individual events, the 100 backstroke, and the 100 breastroke. Byron had enough people to have three in every event, but towards the end of the meet, the Fillies could only send one swimmer out against three Bryon swimmers.

Since the meet was such a small one, it went very fast. Most swimmers had about a minute or two of rest in between each event, making them very tired. There were no best times in the meet as nearly all swimmers added around one second in the 50 free, three seconds in the 100 events, six seconds in 200s, and about 10 seconds in the 500 free.

In the first event, the 200-medley relay, Megan Tenboer led all backstrokers by less than a second, and handed off to Ann Schaefer. Ann swam the breastroke well, and held on to the lead for butterflier, Lindsey Smith. Lindsey gained a larger lead on the Tiger Shark "A" relay and touched off to fellow freshman swimmer, Michelle Bos. They won the event by eight seconds with a time of 2:16.46.

The 200 freestyle was just a preview of how difficult a meet this was going to be. The Fillies sent Megan Tenboer and Ann Schaefer out into the battle pool. About two minutes after Megan and Ann finished the relay, they dove back into the water. That really is not that much rest in between events. If you do not know much about swimming, think of this as track. Imagine sprinting a 100, then walking back to the start line, only to have to sprint a 400 and try to get a best time. That is what all of the Morrison and Byron swimmers had to do. Megan finished with a time of 2:22.42, good enough for second place. Ann took fifth place with a time of 2:49.16.

The next event was the 200 IM. The Smith sisters were sent to take care of this event. Smiley cleared first place easily with a time of 2:26.10, ahead of Emily Jones by six seconds. Lindsey had a bit more difficulty and finished fourth with a time of 2:40.86.

Rachel Fedyk and Katie Kuehl were sent out against three Byron freshman in the 50 free. Rachel won this event by five ticks of the second hand. Her time was 26.45. Katie gathered a fifth place with a time of 32.93. Katie was behind C. Schnobrich by about a third of a second.

In the 100-yard butterfly, Smiley and Lindsey again teamed up. Smiley flew to a first place with a time of 1:06.20, ahead of Byron's Emily Jones by 0.77 seconds. Lindsey finished one place up from her 200 IM. Her third place came with a time of 1:13.06.

Michelle Bos and Rachel Fedyk placed in Morrison's first one-two finish of the night. Junior Rachel swam a 59.46, over ten seconds faster than Byron's best swimmer. Michelle also took her place easily. Her second place time of 1:06.83 was faster than Byron's best, also, by four seconds.

Megan Tenboer was in front of all of the 500'ers for the whole time. First place came for Megan with a time of 6:08.39, ahead of Rachel Breck by three seconds. Katie Kuehl swam a 6:58.22. Her fourth place finish came over T. Myers by twenty seconds.

The 200 freestyle relay also won easily. Smiley, Michelle, Ann, and Rachel finished with a time of 1:57.95. They were ahead of Byron "A" by seven seconds.

The 100 backstroke only had one Morrison swimmer, Michelle, vs. three Byron swimmers. Michelle took fourth place with a time of 1:25.12, behind Jeanine Getzelman by less than five seconds.

Ann Schaefer came back from her 200 freestyle to win the 100 breastroke, where she too was the only Morrison swimmer available. Ann cleared the event by four seconds ahead of Byron's B. Schnobrich.

The final event of the night was the 400 freestyle relay. Morrison won this event by the widest margin all night. Their time was 4:15.15, while Byron's "A" relay's time was 4:31.71.

The Fillies blew away Byron by the times, but the score isn't measured by the times, unfortunately. It was a close one, but S. Israel pulled it out of nowhere for the Tiger Sharks. The Fillies final home meet is this Tuesday night, vs. Rockford Christian. It will be senior night for Katie and Ann. This Saturday is Conference and next Saturday is Sectionals, where they hope to send at least two swimmers to state.
