You guys are good! |
| by Lindsay Smith The swimming Fillies traveled down to Moline on October 9, 2003, to take on the Maroons. The ride in the Moline High School parking lost was bumpy as they went over eight speed bumps in a row. Bumpy is how this swim season so far has gone, though there have been many more ups than downs. The speed bumps weren’t enough to bump the Fillies out of the meet as all of the swimmers stayed close to their improving times. The Fillies did very well in putting points up on the Morrison side of the tally board with only seven swimmers to work with. To start the meet for Morrison, after diving was completed by Moline, was the 200-medley relay. The four that brought home second place were: Megan Tenboer, Rachel Fedyk and the Smith sisters: Amanda and Lindsey, with a time of 2:04.47. Next up on the blocks for Morrison were junior Amanda “Smiley” Smith, and senior Katie Kuehl, the 200 freestylers. They grabbed another second and a fifth place for Morrison. Smiley swam a time of 2:09.80 and Katie had a time of 2:38.38. The third event of the night was the 200 IM. The swimmers who made the dive for Morrison were junior Megan Tenboer and freshman Lindsey Smith. Megan took third with a season best time of 2:33.57. Lindsey snatched fourth from Lori Davies of Moline with less then a second time difference between them. Lindsey went with a time of 2:38.52. The 50 free was the fourth event due up. Lanes three and five assigned for Morrison’s junior Rachel Fedyk and freshman Michelle Bos. Rachel swam this event to a close victory, as she beat Moline’s Jackie Hazen by four tenths of a second, the first event won by the Fillies of the night. She had a time of 25.68, only 59 hundredths of a second from the state time cut. Michelle swam her season’s best with a fifth place finish and 30.09 for a time. Smiley took Morrison’s second first place of the night swimming solo in the 100 fly. She touched out Moline’s Meghan Fromi by a little less than a second. She walked away with a 1:06.67 and a victory in her pocket. Rachel came back to the freestyle to claim her second, and Morrison’s third, win of the night in the 100 free. She beat out Moline swimmer Meghan McDoniel by a margin of 0.19 seconds, with a time of 56.59. Senior teammate Ann Schaefer took fifth for the team with a time of 1:11.29 in her first event of the night. Next up for the Fillies were Lindsey Smith and Katie Kuehl, swimming in the 500 freestyle. Lindsey swam a strong 500, staying neck and neck with competitor Nicole Roberts of Moline. Lindsey ended up accepting third in the event with a time of 6:13.12. Teammate Katie Kuehl swam very well also with a fifth place finish. She a time of 7:00.94, her seasons best. Katie almost broke her goal of getting under seven minutes in the event. The next relay for the Fillies took second, only behind Moline’s “A” relay team by 1.10 seconds. The three juniors, Smiley, Megan, and Rachel, and senior swimmer Ann Schaefer swam a good time of 1:50.33. They swam the only relay for Morrison for that event. The 100-yard backstroke was due next in the water. The small crowd saw Megan Tenboer and Michelle Bos jumping in the water representing Morrison. Megan ended up taking third for the Fillies with a time of 1:12.95. Michelle touched fifth, the clock showing 1:22.83. Ann’s third event of the night was up next. Ann was the only Morrison swimmer to face three Moline competitors. She took third place, only a second behind Selena Roots of Moline, with a time of 1:28.24. The final event of the night was the 400 freestyle relay, where Morrison was again outnumbered three to one. The two freshmen, Lindsey and Michelle, teamed up with the two seniors, Katie and Ann, for this relay. They finished third with a time of 4:59.51. In the locker room, the Fillies heard many compliments, even though they had been so outnumbered and lost the meet by a score of 130 to 51. The one that summed up the meet the best for the Fillies came from a Moline mom, “You guys are good.” by anonymous |
