A fumble recovery

Fulton Will Keep the Wooden Shoe Again This Year

On the brisk night of October 17, Morrison’s football teams hosted the Fulton Steamers for the annual “Wooden Shoe Bowl”. Things started out well for the Morrison ponies, earning another win to their great season, but the Varsity team didn’t fair nearly as well, losing 33-8.

With packed stands on both sides for the start of the game, those numbers started to dwindle down as the game progressed and things started looking worse for the Mustangs. Fulton started out the game by fumbling, but on the following return, Morrison was not able to capitalize, going three and out. Soon after, Fulton took the ball in for 6 points, but Morrison was able to stop the extra point attempt. Later, with just under two minutes to go in the first quarter, Fulton scored again on a long run in touchdown, but luckily Morrison held off their extra point attempt again, putting the score at 12-0 at the end of the first quarter.

At the beginning of the second quarter, it looked as if Morrison had found the silver lining to the cloud, by getting a Fulton fumble, but on the next play, Morrison threw an interception, giving the ball back to Fulton. The Interception allowed them to score and make the two point conversion., putting the score at 20-0 for half-time. After the half the game progressed very sloppily through the third quarter, but the Steamers were able to once again score and make the extra point, putting the score at 33-0 at the end of the 3rd. On the following kickoff, Fulton recovered their onside kick, but nothing ensued.

With 1:54 to go in the fourth quarter, an incredible play was finally made by the Mustang offense when Casey Tiesman threw a short screen pass to Jed Renkes, who returned the ball 96 yards for the first Morrison score of the game. The two-point conversion was complete, putting the final score at 33-8. The play that gave Morrison the touchdown is very close to the longest pass play in Morrison’s history, but it is not official yet. Next week Morrison faces Peru-St. Bede at home, where Morrison will have their senior night. We hope to see you all there.
