Morrison Defeats Riverdale in an Exciting Rally

Friday, October 3, Morrison went to Riverdale High School to battle the Rams. The Junior Varsity team was able shutout the Rams and win 41-0, but the Varsity game would prove to be a shoot-out all the way to the end.

In the first half of the Varsity game, Morrison and Riverdale were both equally matched, with neither team being able to move the ball more than 20 yards, which left the game in a perpetual stalemate for the entirety of the first half.

Early in the third quarter, Riverdale’s Justin Coder scored a touchdown followed by an extra point to put the Rams in the lead by 7. Neither team was able to score again until there were three minutes left in the game, when Morrison’s Matt Vandermyde caught a 30-yard pass from Casey Tiesman, putting the Mustangs at the one-yard line. Jed Renkes put in the touchdown the next play and Kendal Mcdearmon ran in to complete the two-point conversion. On the following Riverdale drive, the Rams moved the ball into field goal position, where they made a field goal, putting the score at 10-8, Riverdale lead. Morrison got the ball back with 1:37 to go, at their 30 yard-line, and Riverdale helped them by making three big penalties, giving the Stangs excellent field position near their 20-yard line. Jed Renkes made the run in for a touchdown, and Casey Tiesman put in the extra point kick to put the score at 15-10 with ten seconds to go. An impressive sack by Matt Vandermyde and Zach Stout destroyed any chance of the Rams coming back, leaving the final score at 15-10.
