Newman Defeats Morrison for 3rd Time in a Row

On Friday, September 19, 2003, The Morrison football teams hosted the Newman Comets for Homecoming. It was a brisk night for the game, but it didn’t hinder the turnout; both sides of the bleachers were filled to capacity.

As the Frosh/Soph game started, many held high hopes for a great game and that is what they received. With Morrison coming out to an early lead of 7-0, and the defense holding strong, it looked like it would be a great game for the Mustangs. However, soon after the second half began, the Shooting Star offense was able to pick through the defense and score 14 points bringing it to a battle in the fourth quarter. With less than five minutes to go and the Mustangs with the lead at 19-14, the Shooting Stars made a remarkable drive down the field and were able to push in the last 4 yards for a touchdown. On the extra point attempt, Newman was able to just barely sneak in, which put them in the lead for the first time of the game, 22-19. On the kick return, the Mustangs were able to move the ball but it was not good enough to bring them to win it. The Fresh/Soph team lost, 22-19.

When the Varsity team came out onto the field, they were ready to play. Not only was this homecoming, but the Mustangs had been beaten at Newman last year in a last second trick play, which was the second loss in a row to Newman. When the game started, both teams came out very strong, and each defense was able to hold against the other’s offense, which would prove to be common throughout the entire game. At the end of the first quarter, the Comets were able to score once, and then follow up with a strong extra-point run in, putting the score at 8-0. In the second quarter, the Mustangs were able to throw a 13 yard pass to Jed Renkes and put up a touchdown and an extra point kick by Will Freres, that made the score 8-7, with the Mustangs down one to end out the half.

As the second half started, the teams again were both evenly matched, and they found themselves punting back and forth to each other throughout the third quarter and most of the fourth. At the end of the fourth quarter, the Newman punt return team was able to return a punt for a touchdown, but the Morrison Defense held them at the line and didn’t let them make the extra point. Soon after, with less than 2 minutes to go, Morrison quarterback Casey Tiesman threw an interception, and Newman was able to return it for a touchdown. When Morrison got the ball back again, they couldn’t do anything again, and with about 20 seconds to go, gave the ball over to Newman, who took a knee and ended the game with a final score of 20-7.
