Morrison Football Wins on the Road

After about a 3 hour road trip by bus to River Valley, which is a little south of Peoria, the Mustangs came out ready to fight. The Fresh/Soph team started out the night with an impressive 44 to 7 win, which almost made the drive down and drizzly weather worth braving. When the Varsity game started, it was getting dark, and still raining hard.

With a 1-1 record, the Mustangs knew that they needed to win to carry some momentum into next week’s homecoming game. In the first quarter, River Valley came out strong, and made an 11 yard rushing touchdown, and an extra point kick, putting up 7 early points. Soon after, Jed Renkes charged 13 yards in for a Mustang touchdown, and Will Freres was able to tack on the extra point to tie up the game. The second quarter ended without any other scoring. But after the half, the Mustangs came back with Jed Renkes running in for another 9 yard rushing touchdown, followed by a Freres kick to give Morrison the lead 14-7. The Mustang defense held strong in the 2nd half, not allowing any points to be put up by River Valley. In the 4th quarter, Jed Renkes scored again, but the kick failed, leaving the final score at 20-7.

Morrison was able to put up 19 first downs, against River Valley’s 11. Morrison was able to rush 50 times for 327 yards, and the defense held the River Valley offense to 38 rushes, for 140 yards. Being such a rainy night, Morrison attempted to go to the air six times, but only made one completion, which was a 30-yard pass from Casey Tiesman to Matt Vandermyde. Rushing was extremely successful for the Mustangs, and most notably was Jed Renkes, rushing 17 times for 137 yards. Next was Matt Kistler, who rushed 9 times for 68 yards, and Ryan Schisler, who had 3 carries for 16 yards. Quarterback Casey Tiesman had an impressive night, completing one 30 yard pass and running 7 times for 40 yards, but also threw one interception, in which no gains were made by River Valley.

On Monday September 15, the freshman team was also on the road to Riverdale, where the young team won their game 16-8. On September 19, the Mustangs will have their homecoming game against Newman Central Catholic. This will be the first TRAC 8 Conference game for the Mustangs. The fresh/soph team will come in with a 3-0 record, and the Varsity team will come in with a 2-1 record.
