Influenza Alert

Morrison Community Schools issued an “Influenza Alert” to the students on their Web site today from the Whiteside County Health Department. As of today few cases of the flu have been reported at the school but with a little information students can help protect themselves from a severe outbreak.

Influenza, also known as the flu, is a contagious disease that is caused by the influenza virus. Influenza attacks the respiratory tract. Influenza is different from a cold as it comes on suddenly and may include symptoms such as fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and muscle aches. Children may also suffer nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. How is the Influenza Virus spread?

The flu is spread when a person who has the flu coughs, sneezes, or speaks and sends flu virus particles into the air, and other people inhale the virus. The virus enters the nose, throat, or lungs of a person and begins to multiply, causing symptoms of influenza. The flu can also be spread when a person touches a surface that has the flu virus on it such as a door handle and then touches their nose or mouth.

How do you protect yourself and others from the flu?

  • Wash your hands with warm water and soap before touching your face, prior to eating, and after coughing or sneezing.
  • Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.
  • Dispose of used tissues a trashcan.
  • Stay home- from school and/or work If you are running a fever.
  • Do not hesitate to see your physician if your child has the symptoms listed above.
