The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad closed Garden Plain Road Tuesday, October 7 to replace a railroad bridge and the Garden Plain Road crossing. The bridge and crossing are next to the Hyponex plant entrance. Crews arrived at 7:00 a.m. but the railroad didn’t release the tracks until 9:20 a.m. Jim Hays from Fulton is the crane operator who removes each section of the old cement bridge and replaces it with a new bridge.
According to the job foreman, the first section is the hardest to remove. “It’s been wedged in there for 75 years or more and it doesn’t want to come out. After that the pieces come out easy and in about an hour the new bridge will be in place.”
With a little luck, the bridge will be done by 7:30 or 8:00 p.m. the same day.
