| Morrison’s Historical Society opened their traveling Smithsonian exhibit “Key Ingredients: American Food” on July 18 at their Heritage Museum. The exhibit includes displays about the history of American food, technological products to make life easier, and hometown displays. Included in the hometown displays are Goodenough Dairy and Summit Stoves, two former Morrison companies. Dr. Bruce Kraig, a Professor of History was the key note speaker for the opening event. On Saturday the Heritage Museum sponsored Bread from scratch demonstration featuring Bev Miller. Future guest, Penelope Bingham, a cookbook historian for the Newberry Library in Chicago, will speak Sunday July 27 on “What We Cook Is Who We Are”. The exhibit is being sponsored by local individuals and businesses. Rita Nagel, the exhibit chairman, said they are sponsoring food classes every Wednesday until August 27, except during the fair. Classes on local ethnic cooking will be taught including Dutch, German, Swedish, Mexican, and Native American dishes. Preschool to K classes run from 9:30-10:30. Grades 1-8 are taught from 11:00-12:00 and High School to adult classes will be from 1:00-2:00 and 2:30-3:30. Anyone interested in the classes can register by mail or sign up at the Heritage Museum. There is no charge for the classes or speakers but donations are accepted. Saturday, August 9, the museum will sponsor a Barbecue Sauce Contest. Christopher Koetke, a teacher at Kendall College Culinary School will speak on the History of Barbequeing at 12:30. If you visit the Smithsonian exhibit don’t miss the museum’s basement. Board member, Mary Beth Dombroski showed displays on: local company Rich Toys, Jay Bristle and Robert Kelly’s woodworking models, and Native American arrowheads. There are also exhibits and displays for Morrison’s military, churches, Post Offices, and Schools. A display of Women’s Finery includes beaded purses, hats, and shoes. The museum is open Monday-Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 1:00-4:00 p.m. The Smithsonian exhibit is visiting Morrison until September 1. by Barb Benson, theCity1.com |
