The Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office would like to alert all citizens in Whiteside County , concerning a fraudulent scam circulating throughout the State of Illinois. Perpetrators of the scam identify themselves as being from ComEd and that your current account is past due.
They will demand money to be paid immediately by credit card or other method of payment over the phone. They tell citizens that if not paid immediately, someone will be en route to disconnect their electrical services.
Lt. John Booker of the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office was notified by a ComEd spokesman advising of this ongoing scam. ComEd stressed that they never use a live person, when making calls in regards to customer accounts.
Lt. Booker advises anyone who receives a call of this nature to contact their local Police Department or the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office. He advises citizens to never give out personal and financial information over the phone.
Scammers operate by instilling fear in, and intimidation of, their victims. Please do not become a victim.
