Morrison High School Social Studies Teacher Brian Bartoz orchestrated another meaningful Veterans Day Recognition Assembly, on Friday, November 10, 2023, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:25. Held in the auditorium, the purpose was to provide an opportunity for students and staff to recognize those who have served in the Armed Forces.
In preparation for this tribute day, students were invited to participate in the “My American Hero” project. They could submit a photograph of a veteran and their service information. These were printed as posters, which lined the hall outside the Office. Submitted by his great-grandaughter, this poster shows the U. S. Army Infantry Identification Booklet carried across Italy and Africa by the Editor’s father, from 1941-1945.
Photographed first below are 17-of-20+ veterans outside the auditorium, waiting to be seated onstage. Editor’s note: Two veterans arrived after the photo was taken of men seated on stage.
Patriotic songs with some sing-alongs infused spirit throughout the auditorium. These included popular music; official songs of each branch of the Armed Forces; “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “America The Beautiful” choir renditions; “Taps” played by Hunter McNeece.
U. S. Army Staff Sergeant Steven Brown, left, and Bartoz were “at ease” after the program. Sgt. Brown recognized two staff members as veterans. He brought Chandler Gilbraith and Jessica Baldwin an acrylic recognition of their service.
The National Honor Society chapter served a light lunch to veterans at 12:30 p.m., allowing them to converse.
Bartoz stated, “The simple meal is a gesture of our collective appreciation for their service.”
Principal David Mills, at right, introduced two Senior students who are enlistees in the Illinois National Guard: Daeshuan McQueen and Jaycie Wagner. He presented them with certificates; Bartoz watched offstage.
Following the assembly and lunch, Bartoz urged veterans to share their story in the Armed Forces with students. These conversations took place as classroom visits.
