The afternoon was beautiful, and the situation was perfect for a good, High School Softball game at Peru, IL, (St. Bede.) That is exactly what the crowd saw, at the IHSA Class 1A Sectional Semi-Finals on Wednesday, May 24, 2023. The Heat from West Central (Briggsville, IL,) came into the afternoon contest with a record of 28 wins. The Morrison Fillies showed no intimidation, as they took the field at Peru St. Bede Academy.
Filly Bella Dunlap took the mound and controlled the Heat offense, by allowing only one hit through the first five innings. In the sixth inning, the Heat were able to combine back-to-back hits to score the lead run. They held it through the seventh, to advance to the Sectional Final on Friday, May 26.
The Filly offense collected six hits, but was unable to score after having runners on second and third with only one out in the fifth inning. The inning ended when a hard, line-drive was caught, and the runner on second was unable to return to the base before the tag, to complete the double-play and end the threat.
The 1-0 defeat ended the season for the Fillies with a record of 18 wins and ten losses. It was the last game under Coach Kim Snyder, who will turn the Head Coach reins over to Chelsea Eads, for the 2023-24 school year.
