School’s Starting – Drive Safely!

Posted by

With Morrison Community Unit District starting school on Monday, August 19, 2013, Morrison Police Chief Brian Melton is asking the community to drive carefully and watch for children by stating.

“With school starting, children will be walking and riding their bicycles to school, and vehicular traffic will increase during school hours as well.  We want to make sure everyone arrives at school, home from school, and at their other destinations safely.”  Melton continues, “With this in mind, Morrison Police Officers will be patrolling the school zones, observing school bus stops, and conducting speed enforcement throughout Morrison as school starts.”

Chief Melton would like to remind the Morrison Community of a couple ordinances as they relate to parking on Academic Drive and Genesee Avenue, the area of most Morrison schools.

  • Academic Drive:  Two-hour parking is allowed on the north side of Academic Drive (westbound traffic.)  No parking, standing, or stopping continues on the south side of Academic Drive and with eastbound traffic.
  • Genesee Avenue:  No parking along Genesee Avenue, which includes the area in front of the high school.

Also, here are a couple State laws to remember.

  • Motor vehicles are required to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians in crosswalks.
  • A person operating a motor vehicle is prohibited from using any wireless telephone or other electronic communication device in a School Zone.  Editor’s note:  Speed limits are 20 MPH in posted School Zones.

In conclusion, Chief Melton asks everyone to “please slow down, be alert, and drive carefully!”
