Members of Citizens for Schmidt, the committee promoting Kristopher Schmidt as a Republican candidate for Sheriff of Whiteside County, were glad the temperature was way above freezing, when they participated in the Galesburg Polar Plunge for Special Olympics Illinois, on Sunday, February 25, 2018. The event was from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
Schmidt’s group was among the event’s participants who raised funds for the privilege of jumping into the icy waters of Lake Storey in Galesburg, IL.
All proceeds will benefit the 22,000 traditional athletes and 21,000 Young Athletes of Special Olympics Illinois. The event in Galesburg was one of many being held throughout the State in February and March.
Individuals or groups contributed a minimum of $100 to participate. A costume contest added to the fun. Since the event’s inception 19 years ago, more $18 million has been raised by thousands of plungers.
“It was truly inspirational to be able to take some time for a wonderful cause, helping the Illinois Special Olympics,” Schmidt said. “They are wonderful people with huge, wonderful hearts!”
