The visiting Rockridge Rockets gained more yardage on the ground within the first ten minutes of the football game, than the Morrison Mustangs collected all night in a once-sided contest on Friday, September 16, 2016.
The once-beaten Rockets wasted no time in defining their game plan. Quarterback Riley Fetterer split the Mustang defense on the opening snap for 28 yards. Two snaps later he gained another 29 yards, before crossing the goal on an eight-yard run. This opened the scoring with 10:10 left in the first quarter. The second possession was just as productive. Speedster Nathan Parchert gained 39 yards in two carries. Fetterer finished the scoring drive with a two-yard plunge and expanded the lead to 14-0 with 5:46 left in the quarter.
The Mustangs retaliated quickly. Quarterback Riley Dolan connected with Ethan Fischbach for a 69-yard touchdown and closed the score to 14-6. Unshaken by the Mustang strike, Rockridge rattled off a 35-yard run by Parchert and a 30-yard touchdown by Fetterer, in only 47 seconds of the next possession. The quarter ended with the Rockets in charge 21-6.
The second quarter started with another scoring effort by the Rockets, as they marched 48 yards in seven plays to push the score to 27-6. Morrison went three-and-out. The Rockets went to the air on two successful pass attempts that covered 31 yards. A 30-yard scoring jaunt by Fetterer upped the score to 36-6 with 6:32 remaining in the half. The ensuing kickoff gave the fans something to remember. Nathan Bush received the kickoff and handed off to Fishbach at the Morrison 15-yard line. He turned up the right sideline and outran everyone, to complete an 85-yard kickoff return, that changed the score to 36-14. Rockridge ended the half starting their possession at the Morrison 45-yard line with 51.1 seconds remaining in the half. Fetterer broke loose for a 19-yard gain. He connected with Cade Kendall for a 24-yard pass completion, which ended on the two-yard line. Parchert crossed the goal for the two-yard score with 30.7 seconds, to close the half with a Rockridge advantage of 42-14.
The Mustangs were able to run the clock with ball control in the third quarter. They failed to generate needed yardage to move near the end zone. Rockridge added another touchdown to mount the final tally of 50-14.
Morrison owned the ball on three fourth-quarter possessions. They managed to gain only one first down on a 21-yard run by Nathan Bush. Rockridge journeyed home with a 50-14 dominate win over the host Morrison Mustangs.
Total yardage on the evening recorded Morrison with 113 yards rushing, compared to Rockridge’s 410 yards. (Fetterer – 229 yards, Nathan Parchert – 167 yards.)
