River Bend School Board Meeting Discusses Remote Spikes

As winter rapidly approaches and COVID-19 virus remains a threat, there are possibilities of changes in the student attendance priority.  It is likely to create a spike in parents desiring remote learning for their children.  This threat was the topic of much discussion in the River Bend School District Board of Education meeting, on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.  Taking the proactive approach, Principals reported feedback from teachers that was recorded during recent staff meetings.  Last year’s initial reaction to remote learning was orchestrated during shortened school days.  The challenge of another such success–while the teachers worked full schedules–creates a serious challenge, according to the Principals.

Remote learning requires double the planning time for the teacher.  The option to assist the time available with substitute teachers in hampered, by the lack of available substitute teachers who are willing to work in the current environment within our local school system.  Board Vice-President Jane Orman-Luker summed up the discussion as “TIME!”  Teachers have neither the time nor energy to perform double the need for each class assigned.  Alternatives discussed ranged from offering extra pay incentives, one-day early release each week, to modifying the school day schedule.  Superintendent Dr. Daryl Hogue ended the discussion by offering to prepare a parent survey, requesting input and/or suggestions noting the challenges of making changes during mid-term.  Among many student issues noted within the discussion, the Board was reminded of the mental stress that the current health issues put upon the facility, and possible assistance alternatives may be considered before the Board in the near future.

Action items brought before the Board were follow.
A) Tax Levy:  A 9.91% tax levy was approved, requiring a Truth in Taxation Hearing to be held on Wednesday, December 15, 2021.
