Good event planning should always include alternate plans to cover last-minute changes–like when your site is under water! Recent rains and Rock River flooding caused a change in venue for the 50th annual Prophetstown, IL, 4th of July celebrations.
The event will take place Friday, July 4, 2014, but events will be on dry ground, rather that in Prophetstown State Park. The location will be in a large, open field north of Birkey’s Farm Stores, 200 North Street, Prophetstown.
From IL Route 78, turn west on either E. Riverside Street or North Street (one block south of Casey’s General Store.)
Co-sponsors are the Men’s Club and Prophetstown Fire Protection District. On Wednesday, July 2, the contingency plan went into effect. Illinois Department of Natural Resources had closed the park.
What has changed?
- The forecast predicts mostly sunny conditions Friday, with a high temperature of 78°.
- The location will be in a large, open field north of Birkey’s Farm Stores, 200 North Street, Prophetstown.
- The 3-on-3 basketball tournament will move to Prophetstown High School, 310 W. Riverside Drive.
- The horseshoe tournament has been cancelled.
What has not changed?
- Park along the residential streets. There is no direct drive-up access to the field.
- Bring insect repellant and a lawn chair or blanket for comfortable seating.
- Donations will be solicited by the above organizations as you enter the field.
- Awesome fireworks will delight, beginning near dusk.
The day offers lots of fun and food booths before dark.
- 8:00 a.m. 3-on-3 basketball tournament
- 2:00 p.m. kids’ races
- 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. music by hometown “Alternative Metal” band, Alborn Theory
- 9:00 p.m. 50/50 drawing.
The celebration continues on Saturday, July 5, with two free concerts in Eclipse Square, at the corner of IL Route 78 (Washington Street) and Railroad Street, sponsored by Prophetstown Main Street.
Prophetstown’s own “Reflex Blues” will play from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Band mates include Amanda Burger, Randy Jacobs, Kyle Prenevost, Mike Rippy, and Angie Stegmiller.
Rock and roll band “Coupe DeVille” takes center stage from 7:30 to 10:00.
