The American Legion organization traces its roots to March 15-17, 1919, in Paris, France, in the aftermath of World War I. The American Legion was Federally chartered on September 16, 1919, and quickly became an influential force at the National, State and local levels. It is dedicated to service to veterans, strong National defense, youth, and patriotism.
A year after it was formed, The American Legion had chartered more than 5400 local posts that continue to operate today. It has grown to more than 13,000 posts around the world, with more than 2.2 million wartime-veteran members. Throughout its first century, the American Legion built a legacy on such accomplishments as leading the way to create U. S. Flag Code; helping start the Veterans Administration; drafting and getting passed the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 (the GI Bill) which transformed America in the second half of the 20th century; helping veterans receive benefits for health-care conditions based on their honorable service, including acceptance of Agent Orange exposure as service-connected.
Today, the American Legion has nearly 3000 accredited service officers worldwide who assist veterans with their benefits claims and other concerns.
Sterling, IL, Post 296 currently numbers 298 members plus 318 in the affiliated American Legion Auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion. Post 296 has had a significant impact on the community. Annually the post presents Memorial Day and Veterans Day Programs, provides Honor Guard for military funerals, and companionship to veterans in nursing facilities. The post sponsors Boys and Girls State participants, many local high school scholarship recipients, Legion Baseball, and numerous charitable organizations in the Sauk Valley. Nationally the post contributes to the American Legion Child Welfare Fund, Stop Soldiers Suicide, and so much more.
“The American Legion Family of Sterling is excited to share both the legacy and the vision of our organization,” Post 296 Commander Jim Gordon said. “We’ve done a lot of good and intend to keep doing it for a second century.”
Many public events are planned to celebrate the centennial year. Activities take place at American Legion Post 296, 601 First Avenue in Sterling.
- Saturdays, July 20, and September 21, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.–Open House is planned for veterans and their families. Information regarding many veteran benefits will be presented. There will be children’s activities.
- Monday, August 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.–Annual Chicken BBQ and 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.–Silent Auction
- Saturday, September 7,–American Legion Golf Outing. Details to be announced.
