Police Announce 2020 Helmet Incentive Program

Posted by

DQGrillChillLogoMorrison, IL, Police Chief Brian Melton is proud to announce the Helmet Incentive Program again this year.  The program, which started in 2009, is to promote bicycle safety among our youth.  It is only possible through the continued partnership and support of the DQ Grill & Chill owners Ellen and Bart Smith.  2020 marks the program’s 12th year.

MPD offers an incentive to those children that wear their helmet when bicycling.

CopPatchChief Melton explains, “Starting Friday, May 1, and through the summer months, anytime a Morrison Police Officer observes a child between the ages of 3 and 16 safely riding their bicycle with their helmet on, the Officer will reward that child with a coupon for free ice cream at DQ Grill & Chill in Morrison.”  Melton continues, “We hope this program continues to encourage parents and our youth to wear their helmets and practice bicycle safety when riding.”

Even with the COVID-19 restrictions, children are encouraged to get outside and ride their bicycles, but with their immediate family members only.  If a Morrison Police Officer stops to meet a child riding their bicycle with their helmet on, the Officer will do so utilizing additional safety precautions, to maintain social distancing and to avoid personal contact.

Melton closed with, “We are very grateful to the DQ Grill & Chill, Ellen and Bart Smith, and their staff for their continued support.  Most importantly, we are excited about having the opportunity again this year.  We hope to reward even more children this year…so, wear your helmets and encourage others to do so as well!”
