The year 2020 is rapidly drawing to a close. Issues before the public are overshadowed by COVID-19, personal, daily changes and restrictions, and National politics. But one must be aware that the City of Morrison is nearing deadlines that can greatly impact the future of our community.
On Tuesday, April 6, 2021, the polls will open; ballots will carry the names of the next members of Morrison City Government. Those positions include Mayor, City Clerk, and City Council members representing the four Morrison wards. These names are soon to be determined, as the deadline for petitions quickly approaches.
To file for an open position, immediately obtain an Election Packet from City Hall, 200 W. Main Street, Morrison, IL. Get endorsement signatures and complete the documents. Return the packet by Monday, December 21.
All positions are open to anyone who fulfills the requirements and owns the heart to maintain and improve the Morrison image for the challenging years ahead. Candidates must
- live within the ward they wish to represent for one year prior to election day
- never have had any felony charges issued
- be free of any indebtedness to the City of Morrison.
As of this writing, candidates aspiring to fill the Mayor’s chair are current Acting City Clerk Scott Vandermyde and current Alderman Vern Tervelt.

As local Legislators, Council members are responsible for, and responsive to, the citizens who elected them. Duties placed before them include some of the following:
● Review and approve the annual budget
● Establish long- and short-term objectives and priorities
● Oversee performance of local public employees
● Oversee effectiveness of programs
● Establish tax rates
● Enter into legal contracts
● Borrow funds
● Pass Ordinances and Resolutions
● Modify the City’s Charter
● Regulate land use through zoning laws
● Regulate business activity through licensing and regulations
● Regulate public health and safety
● Exercise the power of eminent domain
● Communicate policies and programs to residents
● Respond to constituent needs and complaints
● Represent the community to other levels of Government.
The four-year position of City Clerk is a part-time commitment. This person serves as liaison between the public and City Council. He/She provides municipal services, such as preparing Council packages and recording minutes; recording Birth/Death Certificates; recording City Ordinance updates.
