Editor’s note: Mary Pratt searched for these early Yearling photographs to recognize the first Pon-Pons and Majorettes.
Morrison High School Band Director Bob Glidden initiated a Pons Squad in the fall of 1961. The girls wore handmade skirts and purchased sweaters, according to one of the first members, Betsy Komlanc Prombo. She stated, “Girls were from each class, chosen by Mrs. Pape and the Head Majorette.”
Mary Olson Pratt, Class of 1964, found this 1962 Yearling yearbook photo on page 63 and submitted it to the Editor. After the 1962-1963 school year, Glidden took another position, and the Pons Squad lapsed for some time. From left-to-right around the arc are (maiden names) Sandy Snyder, Coan Rick, Linda Martin, Betsy Komlanc, Debbie VanDyke, Carol Haendler, Patty Richie, Nadine Doonan, Eileen Fitzgerald, Andrea Carney, Jane Oncken, and Mary Olson.
Majorettes at practice from the same year left-to-right (maiden names) include Marcia Maxfield, Pat Stitcher, and Karen Planthaber. Their responsibilities are listed in the Yearling article.
