Phil “Billygoat” Akker, passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2019, at his home in Morrison, IL, from an extended illness.
Philip Gene Akker was born March 25, 1957, in Morrison, the son of Louis and Beverly (Carley) Akker. He grew up in Chadwick, IL, and was a 1975 graduate of Chadwick High School. He had an eye for good looking women and fast muscle cars. In the spring of 1976, Phil saw his future bride of 39 years, while she was driving her 1969 Camaro. It was often stated, he was unsure whether he saw her or the Camaro first. He and Deb eventually married May 17, 1980. They are the parents of one daughter, Cara Jean. Phil grew up on the family dairy farm. As an adult, he worked with his dad and brother on the farm and drove semi for 40-plus years. While being an owner operator, he took great pride in the maintenance and appearance of their Kenworth. Friday night date nights consisted of washing and polishing the semi and chrome wheels. He was happiest while working on his drag cars. He always had the need for speed. In his opinion, “A few drag race; the rest run automatics.” Phil took drag racing so seriously, that family vacations were centered around an NHRA drag racing event. Phil was an instigator. One could tell he was teasing, by the gleam in his eyes. It was once said, “A little bit of Phil goes a long way.”
He is survived by his wife, Deb; daughter, Cara (Eric) Knott; sister Pam (Dave) Sikma; brother Steve Akker; many nieces and nephews; his beloved black, 68 Chevelle and his 79 Ford pickup.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Bev; mother- and father-in law, Bob and Jean Dyson; sister-in-law, Cathy Akker.
Memorial visitation is Saturday, December 28, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with a memorial service at 1:00 p.m., all at Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Morrison, IL.
