Moments–or seconds–within the varied world of sports can become sublime for their power to change an outcome. An athlete may carry the memory of one personal achievement far into their adult years. Teams en masse also relive such victory moments.
Such a situation was in the making for an 11-year-old, sixth grader on the Colts Basketball team, on Wednesday, November 15, 2023, at home. The teams were tied after four quarters; two overtimes left the score unchanged. A third, “Sudden Death” overtime would be decided in favor of the team that was able to score.
Three Colts waited under their basket down court, for the ball to be returned to play and for two teammates to join them. A lone boy was at far left, near the basket; all the action was at the far right. He waved his arm to signal he was open for a pass, but his team made a different choice. Then he waved both arms, and no one was in position to block the pass. Still alone, no one was able to block his catch and easy toss-in for the win.
Patience and poise secured a victory in 18 seconds.
