When the calendar flips to August, teachers, students, and parents know the beginning of school is near. We all remember that “certain” teacher. Maybe it was someone like Mr. Holland. Odell Public Library Friends presents “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” a film about a struggling teacher and his rebellious students, on Tuesday, August 8, 2017.
The movie begins at 2:00 p.m., in the Program Room at Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL.
“Mr. Holland’s Opus” spans 30 years. It begins with young Glenn Holland, who aspires to be a composer, but he must support himself playing at weddings and various celebrations. He is forced to take a high school teaching job in a small town near Portland, OR. Although he struggles, Holland rises to the occasion.
He popularizes Music Appreciation class using pop music. He inspires his students with the ideals to trust their heart and follow their dreams.
Through various episodes of his 30-year teaching career, there are defining moments: the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, the Vietnam War, the plague of drugs and school violence, and cost-cutting of the music program itself.
The film highlights Holland’s value to the community and his real opus, which is his generous life.
The 1996 film stars Richard Dryefuss as Glenn Holland, Olympia Dukakis as Principal Jacobs, and William H. Macy as the Vice Principal.
