“Raiders of the Lost Ark” visits Odell Public Library on Tuesday, July 14, 2015, beginning 2:00 p.m. in the Program Room, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL. This daredevil, tongue-in-cheek film by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas takes off like a shot and runs at a breakneck pace until the movie’s end!
“The film is an homage to those old-time movie serials and back-lot cheapies, that inspired our imaginations and evoked memories of movie-going at an earlier time,” reported The New York Times.
“‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ is one of the most deliriously funny, ingenious, and stylish American adventure stories ever made,” raved movie critic Vincent Canby.
The film is collaboration between George Lucas, who is famous for his Star War series, and Steven Spielberg, who brought us “ET.” The two were on vacation in Hawaii in 1977 when they came up with the idea for the film. They originally wanted Tom Selleck to play the role of the hero, Indiana Jones, however, he could not get out of his contract with “Magnum PI.” So, Harrison Ford, who had played Han Solo in the Star Wars blockbuster, became the archaeologist with a knack for landing in tight situations in exotic locations.
The film, which is often pricelessly funny, is set in 1936. The United States Government sends Indiana Jones and his girlfriend, Marion, on a mission to find the Ark of the Lost Covenant, before a team of Nazi archaeologists can lay their hands on it. Hitler is obsessed with the ark, which supposedly has magical and mystical powers. The Ark can confer magical powers on the person who possesses it–and it acts like “a radio speaking to God.” No wonder the U. S. sends Indiana and Marion on this daring and life-threatening journey! Together they face tests of endurance: ancient tombs filled with snakes, an attack of poisoned darts, and a super-chase on horseback.
You will find popcorn, pop, and air-conditioning, too. There is no charge, although donations are welcome.
Come join the adventure of Indiana Jones!
