On Monday April 26, 2021, Northside Elementary School Preschool and Kindergarten students enjoyed a fun-filled day, in the school’s butterfly garden.
Morrison Early Learning Program (MELP) Teacher Jenni Williams organized activities for the preschool students.
They included coloring a butterfly mask; making a butterfly life cycle bracelet; potting sunflower seeds, for each student to take home and watch grow.
Fifteen youngsters and their Teachers/Aides were photographed at the end of the event. Left-to-right adults were Lisa Rickels, Pre-K Aide; Jenni Williams, MELP Teacher; Kristina Hamm, Pre-K Aide; Lisa Brininger, Bi-County Pre-K Teacher.
Both Preschool and Kindergarten students planted native prairie seeds in the garden, with parent helper Kelly West. Pictured are Pre-K children. The 1/8 acre of seed was purchased with a grant awarded by Whiteside Soil and Water Conservation District.
Adding to the fun, University of Illinois Extension Whiteside County Ag and Natural Resource Program Coordinator, Mary Nelson, and her Master Gardener volunteers provided a storybook trail and activity.
The Butterfly Garden was planted by students in the spring of 2019 and has become a valuable outdoor classroom. It was recently registered as a “Monarch Waystation,” by Monarch Watch. Students can revisit the garden and be filled with pride, knowing they are doing their part for our pollinators.
If you find yourself near Northside Elementary School this summer, take a stroll through the garden. Try to spot a Monarch!
