Still Time to Order a Holiday Ham from a Morrison Lions Club Member

If you have not ordered your fully cooked, smoked, cooked and boneless ham for your holiday dinner, you still have time.  These hams also make wonderful Christmas gifts for those on your gift list that have “everything”.  Size range for a small ham is approximately 7-1/2 to 10 pounds or for a large ham the range is 15 to 20 pounds.  To order for Christmas delivery, place your order by December 15, 2013 by contacting any Lions Club member or calling Bob Smith at 772-2896, Flora Stralow, 772-4874, Jim Blakemore, 772-3744, or Martha Kophamer, 815/238-7005.  Proceeds from the ham sales fund vision and hearing assistance for the Morrison community and also various community projects.

On Saturday, November 16th, members were busy serving pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausages, and drinks to area residents at the Morrison DQ Grill and Chill.  Parents and youngsters involved with Little League baseball and softball teams have teamed with our club to assist in raising funds to erect a picnic shelter at the Sports Complex.   Lions Club members voted to build a shelter to commemorate the club’s 75th charter.  Even though the weather was dismal, area residents showed their support.  We thank you for your patronage.

Keith Hamstra was in charge of the program for November 5th.  He introduced Mike Senneff from Fulton who presented an interesting and informative presentation about the Lt. Allen Wiersema from Fulton.  Lt. Wiersema, a Fulton High School graduate in 1939, enlisted in the army in the spring of 1942.  He attended Army Aviation School in California, trained on the P47 Thunderbolt fighter plane and flew this plane in the war.  He had continued training at several air bases in England and flew his first mission in December, 1943.  Lt. Wiersema was a decorated pilot with 5 Air Service Medals.  His main targets on missions were to bomb bridges in France in preparation for D Day.  However, pilots did not know that at the time.  On June 5, 1944, he was on a mission to bomb bridges near St. Germain, France, was shot down by German flak and killed near the Palace of Versailles.  A local resident saw the crash and several days later located the plane and body.  After removing name tags and other information, the locals buried him in a grave not far from the crash site.  After the liberation of Paris, the locals turned the information over to the French resistance.  Lt. Wiersema’s body was later reburied in a Military Cemetery in France.  His remains were returned to family in 1948 and buried in the Fulton Cemetery.  It was a very moving program.

Jim Bosma will be in charge of the program on Tuesday, December 3.  He will present a program on bicycling and his experiences with RAGBRAI.

Meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at noon at Happy Joe’s.  We encourage anyone interested in knowing more of what Lions do to come to any of our meetings.  Our motto is “We Serve” and we welcome anyone to our club.  You may learn more about the Morrison Lions Club by visiting our website at:  www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/morrisonil
