Nick G. Hughes, 85, of Sterling, IL, died Thursday, November 4, 2016, at CGH Medical Center in Sterling.
Nick was born August 7, 1931, in Sioux City, IA. He married Nancee Hauser on January 22, 1955, in Fort Meyer, VA. She preceded him in death on April 20, 2012. He served proudly in the U. S. Army and was a pharmacist at the Pentagon during his military service. He later worked as a sales representative for McKesson-Robbins. Nick was a pharmacist with Eberley Pharmacy in Sterling from 1960 until they closed and later went to work in the pharmacy of Osco Drug, later CVS Pharmacy. Nick was a Master Gardener with the University of Illinois Extension office of Whiteside County. He served as a tax aide for AARP. Nick was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sterling and served as a lector and usher. He fulfilled his bucket list wish to ring the church bell at St. Mary Catholic Church.
Surviving are his children, Nik (Phyllis) Hughes of Silver Spring, MD, Kevin (Grace) Hughes of Springfield, IL, Chris (Nicole) Hughes of Durham, NC, Bethe (Craig) Dinges of Morrison, IL, and Ann (Andrew) DuBois of Polo, IL; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; a half-brother; two brothers.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 8, 2016, at McDonald Funeral Home in Sterling, IL.
A private funeral mass will be held with burial of the cremains at Rock Island National Cemetery.
