Across the United States of America this month, National 4-H Week is celebrated Sunday, October 6, through Saturday, October 12, 2013. This year’s theme is “Join the Revolution of Responsibility.”
“4-H youth development provides the opportunity for youth to feel a sense of belonging, develop independence, practice generosity, and experience mastery.”
Whiteside County enrollment for 2012 included 182 youth ages five through 18. The clover logo symbolizes a pledge of the member’s head, heart, hands, and health to make “our Country a better place,” stated Cameron Abell. He is a member of the Hume Happy Hustlers.
Not only agricultural interests are pursued by 4-H clubs. Wide-ranging projects, camping, and leadership experiences are a chief focus of the organization. A sampling includes: aerospace and model rocketry; welding and woodworking; computer-generated art and photography; sewing and textiles; outdoor meals and cooking; animal science and sportfishing.
Displays are entered in the August 4-H Fair, and some are selected for entry at the Illinois State Fair. Ryan Dykstra is shown above.
During October and November club members can attend Visual Arts Spin Club in preparation of projects for the 4-H Fair.
On Saturday, October 19, 4-H’ers aged 12-19 will attend a cupcake decorating class at Baked by Liz, 119 E. Main Street, Morrison, IL, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m.
