The Morrison Mustangs ended the regular season in the style that Coach Dave Peugh highlighted prior to season’s beginning, “We want to be playing our best basketball at the regular season’s end.”
The Tuesday, February 16, 2016, 48-41 win over the Erie, IL, Cardinals was the fifth consecutive win. The team ends the year with a 14-11 record and a fourth place finish in the Three Rivers Conference with a 10-4 record.
Noah Hogue, Morrison’s leading scorer, was held to single-digit scoring, but Ryan VanZuiden and Joey Brackemyer picked up the slack by scoring 13 and 12 points, respectively. The Mustangs held leads at the end of each quarter. They counted four three-pointers along with ten-for-19 (16 attempts in the 4th quarter) from the free throw line to close out the win.
Erie ends the season at seven and seven in the Conference and 17 and 13 overall.
The Mustangs will begin Regional play at Newman Central Catholic in Sterling, IL, on Monday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m. They are a #6 seed and will play the #11 seeded Riverdale Rams. The winner will draw the #3 seeded Oregon, IL, on Wednesday evening, February 24.
