Morrison High School Varsity Wrestling Coach Tony Wright submitted this report.
The Mustang wrestlers competed at the IHSA Regional Tournament on Saturday, February 2, 2019, in Sherrard, IL. The tournament featured five State-ranked teams and a deep field of State caliber wrestlers.
Seven Morrison wrestlers fought their way to the medal round, in a tournament where the top three individual place winners qualify for Friday’s Sectional Tournament, on February 8.
Leading the way for the Mustangs was Colton Linke, placing second. Fighting their way through the wrestle backs to the third place matches were Andrew Schmidt, Ryan Kennedy, Kayden White, Kyle Roberts, Aaron Wolf, and Riley Wilkens.
- Kennedy won a hard-fought 3-0 victory over Alleman’s David Dierickx (an opponent he had split victories with in the past.)
- Kayden White earned his Sectional birth by pinning Erie’s Trevor Cobo for the second time in the tournament, as they wrestled earlier that day.
- Riley Wilkens left little drama in his third place bout, pinning Sherrard’s, Gavin White at the 1:01 mark of the first period.
- Schmidt, Roberts, and Wolf all fell in the third place bout but have a shot at getting in the tournament as alternates come on Friday.
The wrestlers will look to earn a trip to the IHSA State Tournament by finishing in the top four this weekend. The Sectional Tournament takes place Friday, February 8, and Saturday, February 9, at Bryon High School.
