The Morrison Mustangs opened a new season in a new tourney and failed to take advantage at the free throw line and fell to the Genoa-Kingston COGS 50-36 at the opening round of the Oregon ThanksgivingTournament.
The Mustangs came out aggressive and immediately were the beneficiary of the ‘new official emphasis ‘ on reducing contact and were quickly in the one-and one at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter. Failure to make free throws and the inability to control sophomore Tony Lucca allowed the COGS to take control of the game and gain a halftime lead of 29-16. The Mustangs could only record one made free throw in ten attempts in the second period.
Lucca continued adding to his 26 points total in the second half and the Mustangs were unable to cut the the first half margin and fell to the COGS by a score of 50-36. To make the loss more painful, the Mustangs were unsuccessful at the free throw line to the tune of 41% (13 of 32).
The Mustangs will try to right the ship on Wednesday evening as they continue tourney play against Christian Life at 5:45 p.m. in Oregon.
