Five first-inning runs helped the Mustangs to a 10-5 win over Sherrard on Monday. Morrison Mustangs Varsity scored in the first on a two-run single by Justin Jensen, an error, a passed ball, and a ground out by Ben Tegeler. Ryan VanZuiden got a hit in each of his two at bats. He singled in the first and fifth innings. Joey Brackemyer got the win for the team despite allowing five runs over four innings. Brackemyer struck out six, walked six, and gave up three hits. Morse was charged with the loss. He allowed nine runs in 1 1/3 innings, walked five, and struck out one.
The top of the first saw Sherrard take an early lead, 3-0. More runs came home for Sherrard when Lampo scored on a passed ball, and Kelly scored on a wild pitch. After pushing across one run in the top of the second, Sherrard faced just a 5-4 deficit. An RBI triple by Kelly sparked Sherrard’s rally. Brackemyer ended the inning by getting Morse to ground out.
The Mustangs survived Sherrard’s surge and put up four runs of its own in the second. Morrison scored on a walk by Jensen, a sacrifice fly by Mason Sitzmore, a bases loaded walk by Lampo, and a walk by Brock Smith. After pushing across one run in the top of the fourth, Sherrard faced just a 10-5 deficit. An RBI double by Lampo triggered Sherrard’s comeback. Finally, Brackemyer got Kelly to strike out to end the threat. Morrison improves to 14-4. Joey Brackemyer (3-0) gets the win.
