Recognizing that diabetes is a leading cause of blindness and that Lions International is stressing this growing problem as the organization starts its 101st year, your local Lions Club held a Diabetes Awareness Health Fair and Walk at Resthave Home, 408 Maple Avenue, Morrison, IL, on Tuesday, May 1, 2018. Many vendors were present, offering free services and information pertaining to diabetes.
A visitor to the Diabetes Awareness Health Fair received information on healthy food choices. This was one of many tables with vendors.
To quote one of the visitors who has Diabetes, “When you are first diagnosed with it, so much information is given to you. Today, this is a good refresher course.”
She also took advantage of the Lions Retinal Unit for free digital images of the retina. The images (computer photos) will be reviewed by professional staff at Illinois Retina Associates. A report will be forwarded directly to her. For all who attended, we hope the information you received is beneficial to you.
The Lions Club scholarship winners were announced at the recent Honors Night at Morrison High School. The recipients were Danica Connelly and Linzie Severson. This is the first year two recipients have been selected, with each receiving $1000. Donations to the Girl Scouts and to the City for sponsoring a T-ball team were also approved. A donation was also made to Junior Tackle Football.
There were 22 posters submitted for the Peace Poster contest. The winning poster was created by Malerie Workman, below. Her poster will be forwarded to the District 1-D for judging on that level. Other posters can be viewed in the window at the Kophamer and Blean Realty Office, 118 E. Main Street, Morrison. Lion Darlene Smith is shown with Workman.
Members completed the spring cleanup of the one mile stretch of Route 30. There were many bags of garbage filled. Several members of the club volunteered to help place and remove the flags for the Memorial Day Holiday. The Memorial Day decorated bicycle contest was also held, with participants walking in the Memorial Day parade. The Spring Road Cleanup Volunteers, left-to-right, are back row, Steve Wroble and Aaron Johnson; center, Martha Kophamer, Terry Costello, Sue Costello, and Keith Hamstra; front, Tracy Muur. Ken Jansma also participated but was not available for the picture. Bob Countryman also participated and is the club photographer.
Keith Hamstra was in charge of the May program and introduced Mike Senneff, who presented a program on “A Look Back at World War I.” He gave a very informative presentation and included many interesting points that we have forgotten [over time]. A question and answer time followed.
Meetings are held at Happy Joe’s at noon on the first and third Tuesday of each month, with the exception of July and August when the club does not meet. We invite anyone who is interested in learning more about Lions, how we serve the community, and vision and hearing needs to attend any of our meetings or visit our club website at www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/morrisonil.
