City of Morrison Mayor Scott Vandermyde invites citizens to consider serving on one of two critical positions. Click her for two opportunities to serve the City of Morrison.
Opportunities to serve: Historic Preservation Commission, five members, staggered 3-yr terms
The purpose of the commission is to promote the protection, enhancement, perpetuation, and use of structures, of special character or historical interest, or value for the quality of life, prosperity, safety, and welfare of the people of the City of Morrison.
The Commission meets once monthly on the first Tuesday at 5:00 p.m., at City Hall.
The “Historic Preservation Property Tax Assessment Freeze” can freeze the assessed value of a contributing property, within the local historic districts, that has an approved preservation Ordinance. Upon certification, the property tax assessment of the real estate is frozen, for a period of eight years, at the pre-renovation level, followed by a four-year period during which the property’s assessed value steps up to an amount based upon its current market value. This results in 12 years of reduced property taxes.
This program is administered free of charge as a benefit to Illinois property owners interested in rehabilitating their historic properties.
There is one vacancy on the Commission, and this is also a Mayoral appointment. This is an opportunity for interested parties to give guidance to City Council when various issues arise.
Please call City Hall at 815-772-7657 or e-mail mayor@morrisonil.org to express your interest in joining the Historic Preservation Commission.
Opportunities to serve: Planning and Zoning Board of Appeals, seven members, staggered 5-year terms
The Planning/Zoning Board of Appeals is required by Illinois State law. The Board hears appeals on actions taken by the Zoning Administrator and on requests for zoning changes. Their decisions are recommendations to the City Council, which upholds or denies the Board’s recommendations. The Board functions only as a hearing board and is not authorized to become involved in the day-to-day administration of the Zoning Code.
The Board meets the last Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m., at City Hall.
There are two vacancies, and achieving a quorum at their meetings may be a challenge. These are Mayoral appointments. You do not need to live within Morrison City limits, but within 61270 zip code.
This is a group that assists City Council by reviewing requests for variances to zoning regulations. It is important to have interested parties give informed feedback to the City Council. Generally, the requests are for setbacks for garages, fences, etc.
Please call City Hall at 815-772-7657 or e-mail mayor@morrisonil.org to express your interest in joining the Planning/Zoning Board of Appeals.
