MMTA’s Leading Man Emeritus–Don Miller

Posted by

“In 1961, about five people were posing ideas” for a Morrison, IL, theater group.  They met at the residence of Donald and Eileen Miller, “an apartment over the garage of a house that isn’t there anymore.”  What was to become the enduring Morrison Music Theatre Association (MMTA) originated “over Eileen’s chocolate chip cookies,” stated Don Miller.  In short order the group produced its first musical, “Annie Get Your Gun, in April 1962.  “Timber Lake [Playhouse] opened in June 1962,” he noted.  Miller played the leading man, Frank Butler.

On Friday, June 9, 2017, 55 years later, MMTA President Eric Phend, left, honored Miller with a plaque, recognizing him as “Leading Man Emeritus.”  It read, “Presented to Donald Miller in Recognition of Your Continued Dedication to Morrison Music Theatre Association.”  The tribute brought another standing ovation for Miller, but this time, he told the Editor, he was at a loss for words.

The presentation concluded a fundraiser which included an interactive, original, murder mystery and a catered dinner, at Morrison Institute of Technology, 701 Portland Avenue, Morrison.

Miller stated, “MMTA used to produce a spring musical and an autumn drama.”  Proceeds will fund MMTA future productions.  Although MMTA is on solid financial footing at this time, it is important to anticipate future needs.  The group wants to continue to present quality theatrical productions to the Whiteside County area.
