Although the Karpeles Manuscript Museum in Rock Island, IL, has been in existence since 1963, few people are aware of what treasures it holds. The local Rock Island site is part of several locations Nationwide which display the largest private collection of original manuscripts and documents. Chris and Margie Cain, Co-Directors of the little-known museum, will share information as to the history of the Karpeles family and motivation of the acclaimed collection.
The Cains will be guest speakers at the first 2019 program, hosted by the Volunteer Millers at de Immigrant Windmill. Their presentation is on Thursday, January 17, at 6:00 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Light refreshments will be served following the presentation. The facility is accessible to persons with disabilities.
For more information, visit the Windmill Cultural Center and de Immigrant Windmill Facebook page, www.cityoffulton.us, or contact the Tourism office at 815-589-3925.
The Cains have been with the Karpeles Museum for almost six years. Several other Karpeles Museums are located across the U. S. in large metropolitan areas. Each is located in unique historical buildings. We are fortunate to have such treasures nearby and available for viewing. Guests are welcome to attend and learn more about the museum and how it operates.
Items are rotated between museums quarterly; therefore, frequently there are new, unseen pieces. Various topics including music, science, art, literature, religion, and historical documents are part of the general exhibit. Special exhibits are also highlighted.
The Volunteer Millers at de Immigrant Windmill in Fulton, IL, host their monthly programs at the Windmill Cultural Center at 111 10th Avenue, across from the authentic Dutch mill. These programs are supported by a grant from the D. S. Flikkema Foundation.
