The Mike Conrad Trio will perform at Starlight’s Theatre & Lounge, 314 First Avenue, in Sterling, IL. Their set is from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00, on Saturday, October 14, 2023. They will be followed by the soulful sounds of local favorite, the Jerry Criss Band (see photo below), from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. Admission to the Concert is $5 per person, paid at the door.
Award-winning composer Mike Conrad, center, (University of Northern Iowa) leads a dynamic trio featuring Cassius Goens III, left, (Indianapolis-based drummer), and Katie Ernst (Chicago bassist, Twin Talk.) This will be the trio’s second time performing in the area, having appeared at the Second Annual Bellson Music Festival in Rock Falls, IL, in June 2023.
On their fall 2023 tour, funded by a Jazz Road Grant (South Arts), they will revisit music from their debut album, “Reconnect” (2022), while diving into new compositions inspired by members of Conrad’s family. Other stops on the tour include Muncie, Indianapolis, and South Bend, IN; Milwaukee, WI; Davenport, IA.
Conrad has primarily made a name for himself as a prolific composer/arranger of
big band music. His trio compositions have been called “varied and refreshing,
with strong melodies and structures, but plenty of space for spontaneity and
interaction.” In this group, the unique musical personality of each player shines
through, while simultaneously uniting to create a cohesive and exciting ensemble
sound.
