On Mother’s Day weekend, Friday, May 6, through Sunday, May 8, 2016, Morrison High School will be premiering “Shrek the Musical.” This funny, family friendly fairy-tale explores the idea of “happily ever after.” It teaches us that life does not always turn out the way we expect. “Shrek the Musical ” is based on the hit animated film by DreamWorks Pictures–with fun new songs and a slightly different plot.
The story follows the life of Shrek, a solitary ogre, who has spent 20 years of his life being hated, hunted, and bitter. Shrek’s swamp home becomes overrun with “freak” fairy-tale creatures, when the ruling Lord Farqua’ad seeks to purge his perfect city of weirdness. To save his swamp and return the fairy-tale creatures to their rightful homes, Shrek is tasked with saving a princess from a dragon-guarded tower.
He finds himself in the company of an unusual companion: a talking Donkey. Together, they rescue Princess Fiona from 20 years of solitude. Shrek and the princess establish an unlikely friendship–and even a budding romance–as they discover that they are not so different. Fiona’s pending marriage to Farqua’ad poses a difficult choice for Shrek: the life of solitude that he has always known, or a chance at companionship and his own version of a “happily ever after.”
