Meet the Early MHS Pons Squads

Posted by

Morrison High School Band Director Bob Glidden initiated a Pons Squad in the fall of 1961.  The girls wore handmade skirts and purchased sweaters, according to one of the first members, Betsy Komlanc Prombo.  She stated, “Girls were from each class, chosen by Mrs. Pape and the Head Majorette.”

No yearbook photo exists to document the first team.  After the 1962-1963 school year, Glidden took another position, and the Pons Squad lapsed for some time.

Having no knowledge of the earlier team, Nancy James Shank stated she joined the “first” Pons Squad in 1971.  She supplied this photo, which includes members of the 1970-1971 Morrison High School group.

You can make out their plaid skirts, white knee socks and blouses, sneakers, vests, and neck decor–and, of course, pompons.

Shown left-to-right are (maiden names) back row, Laurie Adolph, Jodi Campbell, and Betty Jane Olson; middle row, Sheri French and Lois Dykhuizen; front row, Nancy James.

Driving dance maneuvers and lofty kicks define recent Pons Squads.  Over the past 54 years, MHS’s most graceful athletes have entertained countless audiences, encouraged male athletic team support, and earned outstanding competitive awards.   The tradition of excellance continues.
