May 1 Lions Diabetes Awareness Health Fair and Walk

Posted by

Many people have diabetes and don’t know it.  Are you one of them?  A free Diabetes Awareness Health Fair, with nearly 20 local vendors, free snacks, and drawings for prizes, will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at Resthave Home, 408 Maple Avenue, in Morrison, IL, starting at 2:00 p.m. and ending at 5:30.  Come learn what to watch for as symptoms of diabetes.  You will find information on nutrition and diet, wound care, eye and dental care, and exercise programs.  Blood sugar and blood pressure testing will also be offered, as well as foot massages.   All are welcome to come and learn more about diabetes.

You will also the opportunity to have free photos (actual computerized images) of the back of your eyes, when you visit the Lions Mobile Diabetic and Retinopathy bus.  The photos are sent to the Illinois Retina Association to be analyzed.  Results will be returned to you.  If a problem is detected, a recommendation will be made to see a doctor of your choice.  Diabetic retinopathy is one of the leading causes of blindness.

Join us in the fight against diabetes by walking with us from 5:30 to 6:30 at Resthave, immediately following the health fair.  The goal of the walk is to raise funds for the Lions of Illinois Foundation for diabetes research and diabetic youth camps.  We encourage early registration at a discounted cost by Friday, April 27.  Pick up a form today at any Morrison bank or credit union, Sullivan’s Foods, Morrison Community Hospital, or Resthave.  The early registration fee for the walk is $20 per individual or $25 for a family.  The cost can be offset by getting pledges from your family and friends.  Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.  For an additional $5, you may register at Resthave Home on the day of the walk, starting at 4:45.

If there is bad weather on May 1, registration will still be at Resthave.  However, the walk itself will occur at the Emmanuel Reformed Church-Christ Center gym, at 202 E. Morris Street.

We appreciate donations for the event from Advantage One Credit Union, Emmanuel Reformed Church (gym use as a backup), HVP Vending, Hy-Vee, McDonald’s, Resthave Home, Sterling Federal Bank, Sullivan’s Foods, and Triumph Community Bank, as well as the participation of the booth vendors.

At our business meeting on Tuesday, April 17, Morrison Lions approved an annual donation to Camp Lions.  This camp is designed for children and adults with vision and/or hearing issues.  Another annual donation was made to White Oaks Therapeutic Equestrian Center in Morrison.  This group provides recreational, educational, therapeutic, and social opportunities for persons with disabilities.

Karla Burn, left, was in charge of the program on Tuesday, April 3.  She introduced Pam Pfister, right, Chief Executive Officer at Morrison Community Hospital.  Pfister gave an informative presentation on the $17 million dollar building project.  The project involves renovating and adding on to the existing building an area totaling 36,000 square feet.  This will include badly needed improvements for the emergency room area, operating room, rehab room facilities, skilled care facilities, lab area, dietary services, and the helipad.  The parking situation will also be improved, with staff parking moved to the west side of the building and more parking on the east side for patients and guests.
