Dear Editor:
Scott Vandermyde, son of Dr. Richard and Barbara Vandermyde retired “home” to Morrison after working as an Actuary, both in various Cities in the United States, including Chicago, Seattle, and Los Angeles, and onto Zurich, Switzerland, and Hong Kong. He told me, “The grounding and education I received in this town set me up for a successful career and a bountiful life.”
Scott and his brothers, Mark, Bill, and Steve, were raised in the home on N. Orange Street, which he now shares with his dad, Dr. Dick. After graduating from Morrison High School, Scott was graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science and Mathematics. To round out his education, he took organ lessons and is now Organist at First Presbyterian Church of Morrison.
He said, “I am fortunate to be able to return here. After three years, it is time to not only give back, but also pay it forward. I have the perspective of how Governments work, both across the Nation and the world. I have managed large and small teams of people. I enjoy working with people of all backgrounds and am good at building relationships with those who can get things done. I understand financial management, due to my background as an Actuary and will work to keep Morrison on solid financial footing.”
Scott stated his five goals if elected Mayor:
1. address infrastructure of streets, water, and sewer projects and manage them within affordable guidelines
2. promote our town and get out the message why Morrison is a great place to live, for a variety of reasons
3. use the Main Street Development Project to enhance not only our existing businesses, but attract more to Main Street, including restaurants and shops
4. find a way to utilize the GE Plant for a new business
5. get through the COVID-19 crisis!
Scott Vandermyde’s campaign is based on an “even keel,” and he will continue with what has been started. However, he believes now is the time for fresh and creative thinking. Scott reiterated his idea that the Mayor lays out the options and encourages healthy debate, so that the City Council can make optimal decisions.
“The Mayor is not a dictator, but surrounds himself with good people who have vision, creativity, and ways to implement ideas.”
Be sure to vote on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, for Mayor and City Council Aldermen. Our voices need to be heard.
