Those who love “The Little House” series about the Charles Ingalls family and/or quilt making will be excited to hear Connie Barr’s presentation on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at Morrison’s Heritage Museum, 202 E. Lincolnway, Morrison, IL.
Morrison Historical Society hosts its Annual Open House. Museum doors open at 1:00 p.m., with the program at 1:30 p.m.
Barr became a quilter in 1987 and still has her first creation. The Laura Ingalls quilt she will discuss was begun five years ago. It is on display in her home studio, where Barr leads quilting classes.
She no longer sells fabric, books, and quilting supplies, after closing her W. Lincolnway shop. She continues machine quilting to finish others’ projects. Contact Barr at 815-631-5453 to schedule an appointment.
Using a dozen patchwork design blocks from her books, she selected themes from “The Little House” novels to interpret in reproduction fabrics. Some pattern names easily fit pioneer experiences Laura Ingalls Wilder described: Flying Geese; Log Cabin; Dove in the Window; Corn and Beans; Prairie Queen; Schoolhouse; Dugout.
Barr is a fan of the series. “I like history and going back into [he past]. I’m a more traditional quilter; I take old blocks and do things with them.”
Several students created the quilt using the same blocks, but with a variety of coloration and fabrics. Barr will bring several of these, to illustrate the artistry of quilting.
Morrison’s Heritage Museum is accessible to all and welcomes all ages to hear this program. Stephanie Vavra’s collection of Laura Ingalls-themed items are on display, and her book is for sale at $3.25. Refreshments will be served.
