Late Seconds Defeat Fillies

basketball netThe Kewanee, IL, Wethersfield Lady Geese were the guests for the final regular season game with the Morrison High School Fillies on Saturday, February 7, 2015. 

The lead never exceeded four points by either team, and the Geese flew south with a 42-40 win.

Only four players entered the scorebook for each team.  The inside play of  Kewanee’s  5’10” Lauren Schmidt ejected several Morrison shot attempts.  Morrison’s 5’11” Ashley Greul was up to the match against Schmidt.  She grabbed 13 rebounds to go with her 12 points.  Teammate Emma Sitzmore retrieved another ten rebounds  and scored nine points.

The final 30.4 seconds of the game told the tale of the evening.  Ashley Greul missed two free throws when Morrison was trailing by one point.  Emma Sitzmore was fouled on the rebound and awarded two free throws.  She made them both, to make the score 40-39 in favor of the Fillies.  Kewanee’s Ally Kazuboroski netted a three-pointer at the 12.8 second mark, but Morrison failed on three shot attempts.  The Fillies ended the regular season with a 42-40 loss.

Morrison will enter post-season play as the #1 seed in the Fulton Regional and will play at 6:00 p.m.on Tuesday evening, February10.

Final score:  Morrison 40, Wethersfield 42

Wethersfield:  7 – 19 – 12 – 14 = 42

Morrison:  10 – 9 – 8 – 13 = 40
