Larry William Smith, 78, of Lyndon, IL, passed away at OSF in Rockford, IL, on Friday, March 24, 2023.
He was born to Warren N. Smith and Yetta R. Lyon, November 4, 1944. Larry originally is from Morrison, IL, but he graduated from Sterling High School in 1962.
He married Linda C. Miner in 1965; she later passed in 1998. Larry then married Kathy W. Gaumer. They have been married for the past 23 years.
He most notably is known for his position as a Lyndon Police Officer, with his trusty poodle, and as a Whiteside County Jailor. Larry is also known for never meeting someone he couldn’t talk to, always having a story, and being willing to help anyone who needed it.
Larry was known to many but loved dearly by his family. He will be remembered with full but heavy hearts that will miss him terribly.
He is survived by his wife, Kathy of Lyndon; brother, Warren N. Smith, Jr.; son, Roger (Danielle) Smith of Prophetstown, IL; daughter, Carol Clary of Prophetstown; five grandchildren, Candice Adams of NM, MacKenzie Clary of Morrison, Jack Clary of NC, Isabel Smith of Morrison, and Bryar Smith, stationed in Germany with the Air Force; stepson, Steven Gaumer of Sterling, IL; stepdaughters, Michelle (Brian) Lenox of Rock Falls, IL, and Julie Gaumer of Rock Falls; many step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren; many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his late wife, Linda C. Smith; mother, Yetta R. Smith; father, Warren N. Smith; first stepfather, Lyle B. Frank; second stepfather, Talmage I. Todd; sister, Sue Todd; stepdaughter, Dawn Gaumer; step-granddaughter, Savanah Stage.
As we say, “See you later,” we are comforted by the thought of him going on a long-overdue motorcycle ride and dancing again to Bluegrass music.
A Gathering of Family and Friends will commence Wednesday, March 29, 2023, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at McDonald’s Funeral Home in Prophetstown, IL.
Cremation rites have been accorded.
