Get ready to “Read for the Win,” Morrison. Odell Public Library’s Olympic-themed, summer reading programs offer fun opportunities for children, teens, and adults. Odell’s traditional Summer Reading Club, sponsored by the United Way of Whiteside County, aims to help students bridge the literacy gap between school sessions.
- Children who don’t read over the summer months can lose up to two months of learning.
- Kids who keep their reading muscles sharp perform better in reading and math, when they return to school in the fall.
Let Odell help keep your child reading this summer.
Summer Reading Club is open to children preschool-age through 8th grade. It meets each Thursday beginning Thursday, June 16, through Thursday, July 14, 2016. There will be a variety of games, crafts, and entertainment, including visits from Forest Park Nature Center and Ben’s Bubble Show. All programming takes place from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., with the exception of a special afternoon performance from magician/ventriloquist Chris McBrien.
Each child will track the number of books and minutes read over the five-week period and receive prizes during the last week. Children must register for the program by Saturday, June 4. Registration materials were sent home from school with students. Additional forms are available at Odell Public Library, 307 S. Madison Street, Morrison, IL, or online at http://odellpubliclibrary.com.
Odell also offers summer reading opportunities for teens and adults. Reading makes Morrison a brighter, stronger community, and we want to include everyone in the fun. Simply read a book of your choosing, then stop by Odell to rate the book. You will be entered into a weekly prize drawing. Book ratings will be posted in the library, so everyone can see what Morrisonites are reading this summer. Maybe you’ll be inspired to pick up a new author–or to steer clear of another! Prizes for this program have been generously donated by area businesses.
Drawings will take place each Friday at 5:00 p.m., beginning Friday, June 17, and ending Friday, July 15. Participants need not be present to win.
In the spirit of our “Read for the Win” theme, Odell has partnered with several other area libraries to participate in Library Night with the Clinton LumberKings. Specially-priced tickets for the event must be purchased at Odell Public Library prior to the game. $1 of each ticket sale will benefit Odell Public Library.
Cost is just $4 per ticket or $8 per meal-deal/ ticket, which includes a ticket to the game along with a hot dog, chips, and drink. Children five and under are admitted at no charge.
Bring the whole family to enjoy a ballgame as the LumberKings take on the Peoria, IL, Chiefs Wednesday, June 15, at 6:30 p.m. The community is invited to attend this unique event celebrating area libraries. It also happens to be “50-cent wing night. “
