The Volunteer Millers will host a special patriotic music program on Tuesday, July 2, 2019, at 6:00 p.m., entitled “Civil War Melodies.” Weather permitting, the program will be outside in front of de Immigrant Windmill at 10th Avenue and 1st Street in downtown Fulton, IL. If there is inclement weather, the musical program will be inside the Windmill Cultural Center on the same site.
The event is free and open to the public. The Windmill Cultural Center is accessible to persons with disabilities. Food, games, and activities will also be available at Fulton’s Summer Nights event. Limited seating will be available, so you may wish to bring your own lawn chair.
Dan Haughey, actor-singer-storyteller from East Moline, IL, will perform familiar Civil War tunes with his guitar. He is a Black Hawk College Professor Emeritus of Speech and Theatre Arts. Having a passion for acoustical guitar and vocal music, Dan has performed at various levels since high school. His program includes numerous traditional songs like “Jimmy Crack Corn,” “Tenting Tonight,” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
Frequently, war tunes were developed and sung to provide support and encouragement to troops during major conflicts and various time periods in U. S. history. The Civil War was no exception. Join us to reflect on that era of our Nation’s history, as we approach the Independence Day celebration.
This program is co-sponsored by generous funding from the Illinois Humanities “Road Scholars” program, a State agency supporting the enrichment of the education of the Arts in Illinois.
