Kathryn Janicek will perform a vocal recital at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 301 W. South Street, Morrison, IL, on Sunday, March 15, 2015, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Piano accompanist will be Christine Holmer of Clinton, IA. Selections will include compositions by Mozart, Schumann, Debussy, Fauré, and several American composers. The program will conclude with arrangements of African-American spirituals by Moses Hogan.
Janicek, a resident of Morrison, retired in 2008 after teaching vocal music for 18 years in the Erie, IL, schools. Prior to teaching at Erie, she taught for nine years at Augustana College, Rock Island, IL. She is the Choir Director and Organist at Bethesda Lutheran Church and teaches voice privately in her home. She has served as Conductor for the bi-annual performances of Handel’s “Messiah” in Morrison for over 35 years. Mrs. Janicek currently sings with the Handel Oratorio Society and Quad City Choral Arts; she studies voice with Sonja Hurty at Augustana.
Holmer is active as a performer and accompanist. She is Director of Music at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clinton and teaches organ and piano privately. She has served as accompanist for the Clinton Showboat Theatre, Ashford University, and RiverChor. Local concert-goers will also be familiar with Mrs. Holmer through her work as accompanist for the Morrison “Messiah” performances.
According to Janicek, “It is sad that many people don’t realize that classical vocal music can be entertaining. One of my major goals in presenting this recital is to de-bunk that myth. I hope that people will have a good time and enjoy this program.”
The entire community is invited to share in this afternoon of song.
